Dice Games

Moving to a more sustainable, localised and a neighbourhood/community-based lifestyle can mean an opportunity to discover (or rediscover) traditional games and pastimes which you can share with those around you. Here are some games that use nothing more than dice, a few sheets of paper and sometimes some games counters.

Shut the Box

Number of Players

2 upwards

Equipment
2 dice, a number board (see below) and nine counters to cover the numbers.

Object of the Game
Get the lowest number by covering up the most numbers.

How to Play
The first player throws the dice and then places counters over numbers on the board that adds up to the total on the dice.

Example:
If you throw a 3 and 5 that totals 8. So you can cover 8 or 1 & 7 or 3 & 5 or 2 & 6 or 1, 2 & 5 or 1, 3 & 4

Once a number is covered it remains covered and cannot be used again.

Each player’s turn ends when the total of the two dice cannot be reached with any of the uncovered numbers. At this point add up all the uncovered numbers. Now remove all the counters.

Now it’s the turn of the next player.

The winner(s) is/are the person/people with the lowest total of uncovered numbers.
